Ten pearls of wisdom

For the tenth and last in our series of “Tens” to mark Blue Sail’s first decade – here is our string of ten pearls, polished by the seas of experience šŸ™‚ . Happy New Year everyone!

  1. Always start with where you want to get to and then work back from there
  2. Things always take longer than you think they will – from writing a plan to executing it – so double the timescale you first think of – and then add some
  3. Do fewer things if you want to do them well – quarter the number of actions you start out with – and then remove a few more
  4. Constantly ask yourself – ā€œwho is my visitor and what would they think of thisā€ – all the time, every day, for everything
  5. Itā€™s not about the money – not really; itā€™s about the people
  6. A consultant report is just the write-up; it’s how they got there and who they involved along the way that counts
  7. Remember – the best learning is the process, not the ā€˜thingā€™; the ā€˜thingā€™ has been done before
  8. We are storytelling animals: weā€™re hardwired to absorb, remember and retell stories. Ā So turn your data into stories, and touch peopleā€™s hearts as well as their minds
  9. Partnership isnā€™t easy, and it isnā€™t quick. Ā You have to work at it, and work hard. Ā But itā€™s worth it. Ā Strong partnerships get things done
  10. Dare your destination to be its true self, not a copy of somewhere else.
