Landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes … the Blue Sail team have picked their favourite UK “scapes” for the latest in our Top 10s series to celebrate our first decade in business.
- Looking down on Grasmere & Rydal Water from LoughRigg in England’s Lake District: on the other side of the valley runs the footpath from Dove Cottage to Rydal Mount – both Wordsworth’s homes. This is quintessential Lakes – a breathtaking landscape of natural and cultural icons.
- The London skyline from the bar at the top of the Tate Modern, looking down on the “wobbly bridge” and Shakespeare’s Globe, straight across the Thames to St Paul’s, and east along the river towards docklands … such layers of history and an ever-changing scene.
- Edinburgh from Arthur’s Seat because it’s so cool to have a volcano in the middle of a city – and to be standing on it looking over this beautiful city.
- Looking out to sea in Margate on a summer’s evening. The golden sands and pink sunset of a Turner sky takes your breath away.
- View from the top of Old Pale on the edge of the Delamere Forest because you can see seven counties in England and Wales and iconic landmarks like Jodrell Bank and Liverpool Cathedral.
- The Couple Sculpture at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea that frames the seascape because it so unexpected and massive.
- The layering of Bridges across the Tyne gorge at Newcastle-Gateshead – seen from the train window heading north. Such a strong sense of arrival.
- The Seven Sisters from Seaford Head – where the Cuckmere’s extraordinary oxbows and the National Park meets the sea at the eastern end of the 100-mile South Downs Way.
- The V&A Museum of Design Dundee emerging out of the ground and defining the regenerated waterfront – designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and opening summer 2018.
- The Titanic Belfast – to-scale, magnificent, exciting architecture housing an award-winning visitor attraction. At ground level looking up at the structure the size of the Titanic’s hull, in the dry dock where she was built, you get such a strong sense of “standing on the spot”.
