Signs of the Times

I had to drive a tricky little journey today, no more than 20 miles each way, but cross country and through a number of towns and villages. I set up the sat roadsign.28.620x413nav and let Siobhan (the lady with the posh voice on my Garmin device) guide me to the destination post code. And later I punched the ‘take me home’ button and back I came. Simple.

Half way back it struck me that I’d read no road signs at all, trusting completely in Siobhan’s superior knowledge and dulcet tones. Yet every junction and roundabout was festooned with signs, a myriad of place names, arrows, road numbers, no entries, dual carriageways, bus lanes, street names, speed restrictions, double yellow lines and so on, mounted on poles, bollards and streetlamps or painted large on the tarmac. Chaos!

Signs dominate and demean the street scene everywhere. Do we really need them at all? In 10 years from now everyone will have a sat nav in the car, on their wrist, implanted in their forehead for all I know. Cars will be driverless. Siobhan will rule the world!

Let’s be radical. Sweep them away!  Off with their heads! The tyranny of the street sign can be overcome. Hurrah!
