Setting Sail with Blue Sail Marketing

Last week we officially launched our brand new agency Blue Sail Marketing. Exciting times for us!

It is not however a brand new venture. It’s crept up on us gradually. Over the last couple of years we have found ourselves being asked to deliver more and more marketing and PR activity on behalf of our clients. This has been a lovely experience for Amanda and me, as well as a number of our associate consultants. For a long time we had the pleasure of marketing our country (me at

Scottish Tourist Board as was) and our city (Amanda in Brighton), and it has been a delight to get back into the delivery groove.

Apart from the personal appeal of direct delivery we thought long and hard about setting up an agency. What could we bring to the highly competitive agency world? Surely there are lots of marketing, PR, digital, design etc agencies already operating successful companies? What was different and special about our skills and experience?

We got together with two of our associates Sheona Southern (responsible for another great destination brand – The Lake District) and Colette Walker (previously PR & Marketing for England’s North Country) for a brainstorm and a good look at ourselves.

And we concluded that yes, of course lots of other agencies have great marketers working in them, but we have something unique. We know destinations and destination marketing inside out, upside down and from all other angles too. We have lived and breathed destinations for much of our working lives. We know how important it is to enthuse partners and stakeholders to get their buy-in; we know how complex places are and how they can’t be reduced to a simple strapline or slogan.

In short we ‘get’ destinations.

And we think the time is ripe for our new agency. More and more DMOs, local authorities and tourism partnerships are looking to out-source or are interested in short, sharp, focused campaigns or bursts of activity. We provide skilled hands and imaginative minds to fill the gap or take up the opportunity.
Well so we think – but of course the market will decide! So it is with delight and (we admit) some trepidation that last week Blue Sail Marketing nailed its colours to the mast and set sail.
