A sense of proportion

I know this Blog is meant to be (mostly) about destinations but sometimes things happen that put things in perspective – in this case the disastrous floods in Pakistan.

As a lifelong supporter of Manchester City football club and a resident of a village (Alderley Edge) now associated with highly paid footballers I might be expected to welcome the generous investment of hundreds of millions of pounds by the club’s owners, the ruling family of Abu Dhabi, into the club and the local economy.

But I wonder about priorities when I read of the disappointing response of fellow Islamic nations to the UN appeal for aid. Today the United Arab Emirates (of which Abu Dhabi is part) are listed as having contributed $1.5m to the flood appeal. That’s scarcely enough to pay City’s reserve team wages for a week!

We need a sense of proportion, surely. With wealth come responsibilities.
